Brief History of Rangpur Medical College


Rangpur Medical College is one of the major government medical colleges in Bangladesh, located in Rangpur District under new Rangpur Division.
 undefined                 Location  Rangpur Medical College is situated in Rangpur, 330 kilometers from Dhaka, and 210 km from Rajshahi District. It is located in the northwest part of the city of Rangpur, situated by the side of the inter-country highway connecting India and Nepal. It is well connected by rail, road and air with the capital city Dhaka.   
Rangpur Medical College was established in 1970 during the period of East Pakistan. Governor General of the then East Pakistan, Munaim Khan laid the foundation of this Medical College in1969. The Medical College is situated about two km north to Rangpur town in the area of Dhap, Jail road opposite to district jail and very near to Rangpur cantonment area.The  College started with 50 students in its first batch. Now each year, 175 students get admitted in this medical college for MBBS course. Other than MBBS course there are several postgraduate courses including DCH, ,DFM, MS in Gynae & Obs, MS in General Surgery, MD in Internal Medicine and MD in Paediatrics. It is a fully residential  College with facilities of sufficient doctors quarter, large central mosjid, playground and gymnasium for students. There are three hostels for boys and two hostels for the girl students. Beside these three are separate doctors hostels for ladies and gents for the trainee doctors. Each year ten seats are fixed specially for international students of South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives. The medical college is running with several other affiliated teaching hospitals in addition to its own. These are the infectious disease hospital, hospital for tuberculosis and chest disease, and three thana health complexes in rural settings of Rangpur district. New inclusions since 1991 are the nuclear medicine center, coronary care unit, diarrhoeal disease control and training unit, neuromedicine, neurosurgery,urology, hepatology medicine, paediatric hepatology, respiratory medicine,endocrine and metabolic diseases, paediatric surgery, radiotherapy, physical medicine department, and burn unit. The General Medical Council of the United Kingdom has recognized the graduates of this college with effect from 1 January 1996. Currently running Rp-40 batch.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

Admission for under graduate students are solely controlled by the Director, Medical Education, DGHS, Dhaka. For admission of  foreign student respective country will conduct with Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Currently there is no provision  for  admission of foreign students in postgraduate courses in this medical college and also in other government medical colleges in Bangladesh. Only BSMMU, Dhaka is allowing  a limited number of foreign students in their postgraduate courses.

TEACHING FACILITIES AND EVALUATION SYSTEM

Teaching facilities

Rangpur Medical College and its allied hospitals render the teaching facilities in lecture galleries, dissection halls, tutorial rooms, a museum, autopsy room, modern morgue, laboratories, seminar rooms and library. All the teaching facilities are equipped with modern multimedia projectors with laptops, overhead projector and cordless microphones. Most of the departments are equipped with laptops, desktops computers and multimedia projector.  It also provides equipment for practical classes and laboratory work.                                                          There is a facilities of using internet in the IT corner attached to college library. The medium of teaching throughout the course is English. The facilities which are contributing to clinical teaching along with treatment of the patients are cytological, histopathological examinations, automatic and manual culture and sensitivity, automatic biochemical analyzer, automatic and manual haematological examinations, automatic hormone and biochemical analyzer, clinical biochemistry, radiological investigation, gamma camera for isotope studies,4-D ultrasonography, radiotherapy, electrocardiography, echocardiography, CT scan, MRI, endoscopy and autopsy. Recently ICU and coronary angiogram are going to be introduced in the hospital.

Evaluation system

The university conducts the professional examinations on a fixed schedule laid down in the curriculum. A brief outline of the evaluation system is as follows.
FOR GRADUATION MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery) COURSE:
A. Periodic assessment and eligibility for professional examinations as:-
  1. Seventy five percent attendance in every subject in theoretical practical and tutorial classes separately.
  2. Satisfactory completion of assessment card in every subject.
  3. Satisfactory results (60% marks) in annual examination.
  4. Certificate of good conduct by head of the department of each subject.
B. External examiners For oral and practical examination 60% of the examiners of all professional examinations are external examiners selected by the faculty of medicine of university. They are selected from different medical colleges of the same university as well as different universities.
C. The Examination System (Final evaluation at professional examinations)
  1. There are three professional examinations scheduled at the end of 2nd, 4th and final year for evaluation to confer the degree of MBBS by the university.
  2. In each professional examination students are evaluated by written, oral and practical clinical examination.
  3. In written, practical, clinical and oral examination, the pass mark is 60% of the total mark allotted. The student must pass separately in each of the written, practical, clinical and oral examinations.
FOR POST GRADUATION (MS & MD: General surgery, Gynae & Obstetrics, Internal Medicine, Paediatrics) and DIPLOMA COURSES: DCH, DA, DO, DFM)
A. 80% attendance is necessary in theoretical, practical and tutorial class.
B. For oral, practical and clinical examinations external examiners are selected from senior members of the faculty of same and different universities.
C. Examination systems are as above (written, practical, oral and clinical) and the pass mark is 60% of the total mark allotted.

CAMPUS  

The college and hospital campus (click here for satellite picture) extend over an area of 7597 sq. meters. The hospital building is situated on the western side of the college building. On the northern side of the hospital building there are student hostels, residences for the principal, director, teachers, doctors, nurses and other auxiliary staff as well as the nursing institute, central mosjid, playgrounds, basketball court, lawn tennis court and gymnasium. The Shaheed Minar and main garden are situated in front of the college building. The nuclear medicine center andthe model family planning clinic are situated on its southern side. The hostel for m ale interns is situated at the eastern side of the main college building and a new hostel for female interns has been made in front of the old ladies hostel. New Dental unit building is under construction on the east of Hospital building. ICU building also going to be completed behind the hospital building near department of radiotherapy, on the west side of hospital building. Medical Branch of Agrani Bank is situated in the campus.

RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION

There are two buildings (eight units) located within the campus for professors and four more buildings (32 units) for lecturers and clinical tutors. The Principal,Vice Principal and Director of Hospital have specific buildings for their residential accommodation. Residential accommodation for the nurses, paramedics and auxiliary staff of the college and hospital are available within the campus in different multistoried buildings. There is also on-campus residential accommodation of students, including those from overseas. There are three hostels with 536 spaces for male students (Pinnu - West block and Mukta - East block in the campus)and one[Zia Hostel] outside the campus, and two hostels with 327 spaces for female students. There are two hostels with 120 spaces for intern doctors.

Students' Extracurricular Activities

Student Union                                                                                                                                  The students' union of the college consists of 23 member's committee being elected yearly by the students. The Principal of the medical college is the ex-officio president of the union. The main functions of the student union is to organize  and conduct the extra academic activities from time to time, such as annual sports,arranging cultural programmes, publishing college magazines observation of students' week etc. Besides these , the students enjoy their leisure times with different indoor and outdoor games round the year under the management of students union. 

Voluntary Organizations                                                                                                                   There are several  voluntary organizations of students of this medical college. These organizations work to motivate people to donate blood, and also encourage posthumous eye donation for cornea transplantation. They also facilitate treatment of poor patients through distribution of free drugs and collection of blood. They also arrange clothing donations in the winter season for poor rural areas.

Friends Foundation: It is an old voluntary and social organization  established in Rangpur Medical college in 1998 and registered to Ministry of Social Welfare in 2001. Contact number 01714-256-436.

Students of this medical college take part in debate competitions on the national network, Bangladesh Television (BTV), where they proved their efficiency on many occasions. Similar competitions are also arranged within the institution. They also arrange cultural program mes on many occasions
